The race rules for 2012 were approved by the UPSDA Board of Directors on October 12, 2011.
Most changes were updates to race dates. However, a few changes are worth noting.
Rules for the 2012 Jack Pine 30 were approved by the UPSDA on October 12, 2011. The only changes to these rules are to update event dates and to reflect that the race is now an event of the Upper Peninsula Sled Dog Association.
The Musher Meeting for the Jack Pine 30 will be Saturday, February 18, 2012 at 8:00 a.m. in the Gwinn High School cafeteria.
Changes affecting both the UP 200 and the Midnight Run include a change proposed by our veterinarian team regarding vaccines. At a minimum, all dogs entered in the race must be current with vaccinations for parvovirus, distemper, and rabies. In the section about the Mandatory Veterinary Exam (Rules I.D), language is added regarding the 3-year vaccine. If used, this vaccine must be given by a licensed veterinarian. Rule I.D.1.b now reads:
b. Proof of purchase for valid 1-year vaccines for other vaccinations must be submitted for inspection. A DA2P vaccine that has been approved and licensed for 3 year duration will only be accepted if given by a licensed veterinarian. Proof that such a vaccine was given by a veterinarian will be required. Recognize that this vaccine does not protect for all things that are covered by the DHLPP that is licensed for 1 year.
Considerations that led the veterinarians to recommend this rule change include:
Certain protections (e.g., Leptospirosis, Parainfluenza, Hepatitis) are not covered by the 3-year vaccine that are typically included in the annual vaccine.
Most but not all dogs will be protected for the 3 things in this vaccine (that most dogs will be protected relies on “herd” immunity)
When using the 3-year vaccine, the manufacturer’s recommendation is to have the dog get a complete physical every year to see things early AND to have a titre checked yearly to be sure your dog is actually protected.
The boosters should be given ON TIME, not past the 3 year mark.
The vet team believes the 3-year vaccine is a viable option, but not a vaccine that can be given by mushers
since it must be handled very carefully. Thus, it has to be an approved and licensed 3-year vaccine given by a veterinarian with boosters given on time.
Also affecting both races: In the section on Outside Assistance, the Rule III. D 6 prohibiting electronic communication or GPS devices has been removed.
In 2012, the Midnight Run will start in downtown Marquette. Parking for the UP200 will remain along Washington Street as usual. Parking for Midnight Run teams will be set up in the Pathways parking lot. A 30 minute break is scheduled between the last UP200 team leaving downtown and the start of the Midnight Run. This should allow time for UP200 teams to leave Marquette and get on their way toward Grand Marais.
Midnight Run mushers have a new layover location for 2012 and will take their mandatory rest in Chatham on the grounds of the MSU Extension. These facilities should offer ample parking and improved veterinary support facilities.
As usual, race details will be covered at the mandatory Mushers’ Meetings scheduled for Thursday, February 16, 2012 (Midnight Run at 4:00 p.m., UP200 at 5:00 p.m.) at the Holiday Inn of Marquette.
